Guidelines for Professional Appearance (RN to MSN)

As a representative of Robert Morris University a nursing student is to reflect a positive and professional image.

Dress Code for Nursing Students (Hospital, Lab and Community Agency Uniforms)

Nursing students completing clinical practicum activities must adhere to all dress code requirements for the clinical agency to which they are assigned. Name tags and photo identification must comply with agency standards. If a student identification badge is required, Robert Morris University will provide the student with a student identification badge.

General Appearance Regulations for All Students
  • Variations in dress code due to the requirements of the clinical setting will be clarified by faculty.
  • Exceptions to the dress code which are related to cultural or religious beliefs may be granted by the Dean or a designee, upon written request by the student.
  • Lab coats, uniforms, and shoes are to be neat and clean at all times.
  • A watch with second hand or digital capabilities and stethoscope are required accessories.
  • A white laboratory coat may be worn over the uniform or street clothes when directed by faculty.
  • When street clothes are worn, they must conform to the dress code of the clinical agency. Generally, business casual dress is required with absolutely no jeans, sweatshirts, shorts or sweatpants. The torso should be covered fully.
  • Hair is to be a naturally occurring color, neatly groomed, off the collar, in a style appropriate for a professional person.
  • Male students are to be clean shaven or have a neatly trimmed beard.
  • Nails are to be clean, neat and short in length. A clear or light pink shade of nail polish is acceptable. No artificial nails are acceptable as they have been shown to harbor bacteria.
  • Make-up is to be applied so a natural look is conveyed.
The only acceptable jewelry to be worn with the uniform is the following:
  • Smooth band ring
  • Small button-style pierced earrings (one per lobe)
  • Federal service pins
  • Pins for recognized professional or honor societies
Visible body jewelry and oral jewelry must be removed.
Tattoos cannot be visible.
It is the responsibility of each student to follow these regulations.
