Guidelines for Professional Appearance

The uniform identifies an individual as a nursing student at Robert Morris University and is to reflect a positive and professional image of the individual and the department. The following regulations govern Student Dress Code for Clinical and Lab Settings.

Dress Code for Nursing Students (Hospital, Lab and Community Agency Uniforms)

  • Navy blue scrub V-neck top with the school emblem on the left chest pocket
  • White or navy blue shirt underneath
  • Navy blue scrub pants
  • White lab coat
  • Photo id badge
  • Shoes must be clean and white, navy or black closed toe leather or vinyl athletic shoe
  • No fabric or mesh shoes will be permitted.
  • Students must follow all agency policies related to dress code


General Uniform Regulations

  • The photo id badge includes the student's name and Robert Morris University, and is to be worn above the chest pocket.
  • The uniform must be purchased through the chosen school supplier and can be ordered at any time as needed by the student.


Where Uniforms are Worn

  • The uniform is worn during clinical laboratory experience conducted in the skills lab or agencies where the use of a uniform is required.
  • The uniform can be worn during travel between places of residence, campus, nursing classes and areas of clinical practice.


General Appearance Regulations for All Students

  • Variations in dress code due to the requirements of the clinical setting will be clarified by faculty.
  • Exceptions to the dress code which are related to cultural or religious beliefs may be granted by the Dean or a designee, upon written request by the student.
  • Lab coats, uniforms, and shoes are to be neat and clean at all times.
  • A watch with second hand or digital capabilities and stethoscope are required accessories.
  • A white laboratory coat may be worn over the uniform or street clothes when directed by faculty.
  • When street clothes are worn, they must conform to the dress code of the clinical agency.
  • Generally, business casual dress is required with absolutely no jeans, sweatshirts, shorts, flip flops or sweatpants.
  • The torso should be covered fully-no exposed midriff or cleavage.
  • Skirts and dresses should be an appropriate length.
  • Hair is to be a naturally occurring hair color, neatly groomed, off the collar, in a style appropriate for a professional person.
  • Male students are to be clean shaven or have a neatly trimmed beard, sideburns or mustache.
  • Nails are to be clean, neat and short in length. A clear or light pink shade of nail polish is acceptable. No artificial nails or overlays are acceptable as they have been shown to harbor bacteria.
  • Any make-up that is used is to be applied so a natural look is conveyed.
  • The only acceptable jewelry to be worn with the uniform is the following:
    • Smooth band ring
    • Small button-style pierced earrings (one per lobe)
    • Federal service pins
    • Pins for recognized professional or honor societies
    • Visible body jewelry and oral jewelry must be removed.
  • Tattoos cannot be visible.
It is the responsibility of each student to follow these regulations. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in dismissal from the clinical or lab setting for that day.
